Design change?? or not to Change Design??

I’m writing this page to give views of you guys about the Consumer Product Safety Seminar which i attend recently at the Legend Hotel Kuala Lumpur on 27-28th November 2006. There’s one speaker, Dato’ Dr. Sothi Rachagan from Consumers International; who gives his preamble talks on Consumer Protection Act 1999.

Its a wonder of his talk when he give a classical example on how the ATM machines work whereby the system when it was first introduced is using the mechanism on “cash comes out” later on followed by “cards comes out” order. To that point, when it was new, many customer who uses the machine tends to forget that when withdrawing cash from ATM, they accidentally or not accidentally forgot to take the card. By having “cash comes out” first, the customer takes the cash and walk away regardless of taking the card with them. Funny hah?? not funny? So…what the bank does is…..hehehe to take advantage of this situation, they purposely charge a penalty for those who lost their card.

This have created chaos to the public which is known as “unfair” Now, what happend is that complaints received from the authority by the public regarding this matter. In that case, the authority have instructed the bank to change the design of the ATM machine by having to turn it into “card comes out” and then “cash comes out” order. They have change the design as prescribe by the authority. And everybody is happy!! Now it is fair eventhough the bank set a penalty towards ATM card loss. The lesson from this is that….hey…you’ve got to be a capitalist to in order to make money in this world…but please, it must be a reasonable one. Don’t be an opportunist by charging people on this remote problems. But its a morale too when you can create an income by having to piggybacking on hard situation. Hmmmmmm…think!!! Business!!:)..
